CSE/CSB Freshers: Cycles, Credits, Sections & Grading at MUJ 🎓

One thing that confuses almost every fresher is the Physics Cycle vs Chemistry Cycle system. Physics Cycle vs Chemistry Cycle The CSE batch is divided roughly 50-50 into: • Physics Cycle • Chemistry Cycle Both groups study the same overall curriculum in the first year — only some subjects are shifted between semesters. Chemistry Cycle – Sem 1 Subjects • Engineering Chemistry & Lab • Calculus & Matrices • Digital Systems • Manufacturing Processes • PSUC & Lab • Universal Human Values • Communication Skills • Engineering Graphics Total: 20 Credits Physics Cycle – Sem 1 Subjects • Engineering Physics & Lab • Computational Mathematics • Environmental Studies • IDEA Lab • Biology for Engineers • Wellness & Community Services • PSUC & Lab Total: 18 Credits Physics Cycle students do not have FDS, FDS Lab, or Data Visualization in Sem 1. --- 🔄 2. What Happens in Sem 2? The cycles switch. If you had Physics Cycle in Sem 1, you get Chemistry Cycle subjects in Sem 2, including: • FDS • FDS Lab • Data Visualization (Physics Cycle students usually have 22 credits in Sem 2.) --- 🏫 3. Sections & Cycles 2024 Batch • A1–U1 → Physics Cycle in Sem 1 • A2–U2 → Chemistry Cycle in Sem 1 2025 Batch • A1–V1 → Chemistry Cycle in Sem 1 • A2–V2 → Physics Cycle in Sem 1 (Most CSE students were in G1–V1 or G2–V2.) In Sem 2, the cycles switched for both batches. --- 🌅 4. Morning vs Evening Shift Approximately 50% of sections get Morning Shift and 50% get Evening Shift — independent of the cycle. For example, even if you're in Physics Cycle, some sections will have morning timings while others will have evening timings. ⚠️ Your shift usually switches in Sem 2. • Morning in Sem 1 → Often Evening in Sem 2 • Evening in Sem 1 → Often Morning in Sem 2 --- 🕒 5. Typical Class Timings 2024 Batch Morning • 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM Evening • 1:30 PM – 6:00 PM 2025 Batch Morning • 9:00 AM – 1:10 PM (occasionally till 2:00 PM) Evening • 1:10 PM – 5:20 PM (occasionally starting from 12:20 PM) Classes are generally held Monday to Friday. --- 📚 6. Credits & Weekly Classes A simple rule of thumb: • 3-credit subject → ~3 classes per week • 2-credit subject → ~2 classes per week Lab subjects usually have one lab session per week. Note: Engineering Physics and Engineering Chemistry already include their lab component — there is no separate lab course registration for them. --- 📊 7. How Grading Actually Works Grades are not based on fixed percentage cutoffs. Final Score = CWS + MTE + ETE • CWS → Continuous Assessment / Internals • MTE → Mid-Term Exam • ETE → End-Term Exam The professor then sets grade cutoffs based on overall class performance, so grading is largely relative. Subjects such as PSUC, FDS, and Data Visualization are common across both cycles. Performance is evaluated against students from both cycles, not just your section. --- 🔀 8. Section Reshuffling in 2nd Year Many freshers don't know this 👇 • First-year sections typically have ~80–90 students • After first year, sections are usually reshuffled to ~60–65 students This happens every batch. Don't assume your first-year section will stay together for all four years — many friends may end up in different sections after first year. --- 🙌 Final Note Don't stress too much about which cycle or shift you get. Every batch goes through the same system and ultimately studies the same core CSE curriculum.
